The paper studied the migration behaviors of two typical hazardous additives from paper to three dry food simulants—modified polyphenylene oxide (Tenax TA), multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and carbon molecular sieve (CMS). An ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography coupled with photo diode array and fluorescence detectors (UPLC-PDA/FLR) was applied to determination 4-methyl benzophenone (MBP) and n-octylphenol (nOP) migrated from paper-typed food contact materials to the three dry food simulants. Determination results derived from time-dependent and temperature-dependent migration tests indicated that high migration temperature and long contact time would lead to high migration rate of migrants. However, at high migration temperature, desorption of migrants from the porous dry food simulants resulted in the reduction of migration rate along with the prolonging of contact time. Quantitative results deduced from PDA/FLR demonstrated that Tenax TA was more suitable than MWCNT and CMS acting as the dry food simulants for exposure assessment of MBP and nOP in paper-typed food contact materials. Screening test for six types of food contact materials revealed indeed presence of nOP in two types of food contact materials and the migration contents were 63.3 and 68.3 μg/m2, respectively in the two types of food contact materials.
