Abstract

The work aims to determine the suitable particle moisture content for glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP)-particle-reinforced particleboards prepared with phenol-formaldehyde (PF) and methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) adhesives, so as to provide a basis for the high-value utilization of decommissioned wind-turbine blades in wood-based composite panels for packaging engineering applications. GFRP particles obtained by mechanical crushing of waste wind-turbine blades and poplar wood shavings were used as raw materials at a mass ratio of 30∶70. GFRP-particle-reinforced particleboards were fabricated with a thickness of 12 mm and a target density of 0.7 g/cm3. The particle moisture content ranged from 4% to 10% for the PF system and from 9% to 15% for the MDI system. The measured properties were modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, internal bond strength and 24 h thickness swelling, hereafter denoted as MOR, MOE, IB and TS, respectively. The interfacial structure and thermal stability were characterized by SEM and TGA. Results showed that for the PF system, the best comprehensive performance was achieved at a moisture content of 4%, with MOR, MOE, IB and 24 h TS of 30.7 MPa, 4 960 MPa, 0.89 MPa and 13.28%, respectively. For the MDI system, the best performance was obtained at 15%, with corresponding values of 26.2 MPa, 4 100 MPa, 0.84 MPa and 14.69%. Most performance indicators of the boards from both systems met the requirements of GB/T 4897—2015; the incorporation of GFRP increased the char residue of the boards at 800 °C, and the PF system exhibited better thermal stability than the MDI system. In conclusion, a moisture content of 4% is recommended for the PF system, whereas 15% is recommended for the MDI system. The resulting GFRP-particle-reinforced particleboards can serve as candidate materials for green packaging engineering panels, providing a process reference for the high-value utilization of decommissioned wind-turbine blades and the low-carbon development of packaging panels.
