Combined Effects of Modified Atmosphere Packaging Carton and Compound Antimicrobial Treatment on the Preservation of Fully Ripe Durian

Combined Effects of Modified Atmosphere Packaging Carton and Compound Antimicrobial Treatment on the Preservation of Fully Ripe Durian

Abstract

To address the quality deterioration of imported fully ripe ‘Monthong’ durian (Durio zibethinus ‘Monthong’) during cold-chain storage and transportation, the work aims to develop a preservation system integrating a modified atmosphere packaging carton with compound antimicrobial treatment. Poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) was used as the matrix, and a series of films were prepared by blending PLLA with poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and incorporating zeolite. Based on gas and water vapor permeability, mechanical properties, surface wettability, and thermal properties, PLLA/60% PBAT/0.5% zeolite was selected as the optimal liner film. Furthermore, the paper disc diffusion method and the poisoned medium method were used to identify 100 mg/L slightly acidic hypochlorous water (SAHW) combined with prochloraz (Pro) as the optimal compound antimicrobial treatment. On this basis, four treatments were established: conventional carton + prochloraz (CK), conventional carton + 100 mg/L SAHW + prochloraz (CSP), modified-atmosphere packaging carton + prochloraz (MP), and modified atmosphere packaging carton + 100 mg/L SAHW + prochloraz (MSP). Fully ripe durians were stored at 6 °C for 35 d. The best overall preservation performance was observed in the MSP treatment. After 35 d of storage, the weight loss, firmness, shell-opening rate, and sensory score of the MSP group were 2.72%, 0.55 kgf/cm², 40%, and 52.2, respectively, indicating better preservation performance than the other treatments. The combined application of the modified atmosphere packaging carton and compound antimicrobial treatment effectively delays quality deterioration and inhibits microbial proliferation in fully ripe durian during refrigerated storage, thereby providing a basis for extending the shelf life of imported fully ripe durian.
