Mechanical Properties and Affecting Mechanisms of Advanced Particle-reinforced Marking Composite Materials

Abstract

The work aims to improve the performance and application of particle-reinforced polymer composites and to investigate the damage and failure laws of the composites. Tensile tests, three-point flexure tests, and compression tests were conducted to study the effects of the contents of glass microspheres, silica particles, and calcium carbonate powder on the mechanical properties of particle-reinforced polymer composites. Digital image correlation (DIC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to reveal the effect mechanisms of different particle fillers on the microstructure and fracture behavior of the composites. Under the optimal formulation, the tensile strength of the composite increased by 17.23%, the flexural strength by 15.05%, and the compressive strength by 7.94%, and the comprehensive mechanical properties were significantly improved. At the same glass microsphere content, the higher the calcium carbonate powder content, the greater the tensile strength and flexural strength. An increase in silica particle content reduced the tensile strength but had little effect on the yield limit. SEM results showed that there were defects such as pores and interfacial debonding on the fracture surface of the composite. Glass microspheres tended to separate from the matrix, while silica particles exhibited stronger interfacial bonding. The contents of glass microspheres, silica particles, and calcium carbonate powder have significant effects on the mechanical properties of the composites. The comprehensive mechanical properties are significantly improved under the optimal ratio, which presents good engineering application prospects in the field of road marking.
