Multiple Linear Regression-based Prediction of Adhesion Strength of Cigarette Packaging Paper and Analysis of Influencing Factors

Abstract

To address frequent bond failures such as debonding during the wrapping process of cigarette packaging paper, the work aims to develop a prediction model for bonding strength to provide a basis for the selection of packaging paper and optimization of wrapping processes in engineering applications. The 180° peel adhesion strength of cigarette packaging paper was used as the dependent variable, while surface properties including surface free energy, surface roughness were selected as independent variables and a multiple linear regression model was subsequently established in SPSS. The optimized model yielded a coefficient of determination R2 of 0.692 and provided predictive estimates of bonding levels for different paper formulations under relatively stable adhesive formulation and process conditions. The results indicated that the dispersive component of surface free energy and Ca content exerted the most pronounced positive effects on bonding strength. A rapid tool for evaluating bonding performance and screening cigarette packaging paper is developed, enabling feedforward quality control under existing equipment and adhesive systems and offering guidance for material optimization and process design in cigarette packaging applications.
