Eco-friendly Preparation Process Optimization and Performance Response of Straw-based Meal Boxes

Abstract

The work aims to develop and optimize an eco-friendly preparation process for biodegradable meal boxes with wheat straw and Salix psammophila as raw materials. An experimental scheme was constructed based on the Box-Behnken design under response surface methodology (RSM), with temperature, time, and pressure as independent variables, and mechanical properties (maximum load-bearing capacity) and water resistance (water absorption rate) of the meal boxes as response values and a second-order regression model was established. Analysis of variance indicated that the regression model reached a significant level (P<0.01) and confirmed obvious synergistic effects among the process parameters. The optimal process parameters were determined as 179.5 ℃, 10.8 min, and 9.9 MPa. Under these conditions, the meal boxes exhibited optimal comprehensive performance, with a maximum load-bearing capacity of (53.0±0.8) N and a water absorption rate of (44.0±0.3)%. This study provides a feasible theoretical basis and process solution for the high-value utilization of agricultural waste and the development of environmentally friendly plastic alternatives. The innovation lies in the systematic application of response surface methodology (RSM) to the hot-pressing process optimization of the specific wheat straw/Salix psammophila blend system for the first time, which clarifies the nonlinear effects and interactions among key process parameters, providing a new method for the precise preparation of similar biomass-based composite materials.
