Abstract

The work aims to prepare a polymeric hydrogel endowed with Fe3+, pH and temperature stimulus responses based on modified Rhodamine B(RhB) moiety for detecting trace amount of Fe3+ detection in packaging materials. Rhodamine functionalized polyacrylamide hydrogel P(AAm-Co-RHBMA) was prepared with RhB modified methyl acrylamide Rhodamine B(RhBMA) and acrylamide (AAM). The absorption of Fe3+ by hydrogel was measured by ultraviolet visible (UV-Vis) and fluorescence spectroscopy (FS), and the pH and temperature responses of the gel were investigated. The polymer hydrogels had high selectivity for Fe3+, and the absorption of Fe3+ maintained a good linear relationship between 10 × 10–6 and 100 × 10–6 (R2=0.997). When the polymer hydrogels were alternately immersed in Fe3+ and ethylenediamine (EDA) aqueous solution, its color changed reversibly. Polymer hydrogels could achieve reversible color transformation between pH=3.4 and pH=11.3. At room temperature to 50 ℃, the gel gradually changed from pink to colorless. In conclusion, Fe3+, pH and temperature responsive polyacrylamide containing Rhodamine B is successfully prepared, and the polymer hydrogel has potential application in Fe3+ trace amount detection in the packaging system.
