Energy Absorption Performance of Euplectella Sponge-inspired Lattice Structure

Abstract

The work aims to propose a Euplectella sponge-inspired lattice (SIL) structure under the inspiration of the complex silicon skeleton of Euplectella sponges, so as to get lightweight structures with better energy absorption performance. The quasi-static compression simulation of the Euplectella sponge-inspired lattice structure and four contrast structures were conducted, and the effect of different configuration parameters of SIL on the absorption energy performance was studied. According to the simulation results, the energy absorption performance of the SIL was better than the conventional energy absorption structure for the second stress platform effect during compression of the SIL, the energy absorption performance reached the best when the value of Rkl was 0.3. The result of the contrast among structures with different Rtb showed that the specific energy absorption of SIL increased with the thickness of the diagonal rib plate. From the perspective of compression force efficiency, when the thickness of the diagonal rib plate was 1.6 times of the longitudinal rib plate, the peak compression force of the structure was equal to the average compression force, the compression force efficiency of SIL reached the optimal, and the SIL structure with best energy absorption performance was obtained. This paper offers a reference to the design of the lightweight structures with high stiffness and energy absorption performance by establishing the sponge-inspired lattice structure, which has some extent of potential application prospect in the sphere of absorption energy and protection.
