Abstract

This work aims to fabricate β-chitin nanofiber membranes with high transparency and mechanical properties from squid pen. By using a simple and mild condition, the β-chitin nanofibers were extracted from squid pen with high aspect ratio and good integrity. Then β-chitin nanofiber membrane and α-chitin nanofiber membrane were prepared through high temperature extraction and vacuum filtration, respectively. The effects of mild conditions on the properties of the two kind of chitin nanofiber membranes were investigated by comparing their mechanical properties, crystalline structure, microstructure, surface chemical properties and light transmittance. The results show that the light transmittance and haze of β-chitin nanofiber membrane can reach 90% and 4%, respectively. Mechanical tests show that tensile strength of β-chitin nanofiber membrane prepared from squid pen is nearly 1.5 times higher than that of α-chitin nanofiber membrane prepared from crab shell. Therefore, this biocompatible and biodegradable material with high light transmittance and mechanical properties is expected to be used as a flexible electronic label for intelligent detection of packaging and other fields.
