Abstract

The work aims to summarize the mechanism of action of different plant hormones and growth regulators, discuss their role in the senescence process of postharvest blueberry fruit, and predict how to prolong the storage period of blueberry fruits. The roles of plant hormones such as ethylene, salicylic acid (SA), methyl jasmonate (MeJA) and abscisic acid (ABA) and plant growth regulator 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), and their effects on the senescence process of postharvest blueberry fruit and application in preservation were introduced. The blueberry fruit, matured in the season of high temperature and rain, with high fruit water content and thin pericarp, resulted in poor storability, easy softening after harvest, and eventually aging and rotting. Studies in recent years had shown that, in addition to cell wall degradation enzymes, the content of endogenous hormones could also regulate fruit ripening and senescence, and the application of different plant hormones and growth regulators was an effective measure to delay fruit senescence. The application of high-concentration exogenous ethylene and abscisic acid can accelerate the process of fruit softening and senescence. The treatment with ethylene, 1-MCP, SA and MeJA of proper concentration can delay the spoilage and deterioration caused by postharvest senescence of fruits and vegetables.
