Abstract
With the advent of the information revolution and network innovation, the cartoon and animation field in China has also ushered in an era of revolution, where cartoon characters are undergoing a full-scale integration with product design, packaging design, graphic design, and even overall visual identity system(VIS) design. In the backdrop of contemporary cross-border integration and intercommunication between all media, it is particularly significant to conduct a research on the adaptability of cartoon characters in the VIS field, whose conclusion can not only back-feed and enrich the theory but also popularize effective methods for solving the problem of adaptability. As a result, this will lead to more academic concerns, researches and discussions on the issue of adaptability. It summarized the concepts and status quo of cartoon design by means of integrating existing experience and combining established design views with innovative ideas. A series of case studies and methodological researches in terms of psychological adaptability, functional adaptability, cartoon character design and other applications in the VIS field are conducted. This is an era where the adaptability of cartoon character design is continually increasing, so it is the demand of the age that we should integrate into the traditional design more innovative elements such as the achievements from social science, psychology, technology, zeitgeist, etc., and transform the design into a composite design knowledge structure. The innovative ideas have been embodied in the design language, that is, as regards modeling, color, and emotional expression, more emphases are placed on the study of the adaptability of visual psychology, objectifying functions, media expression, and many other aspects, in order to find the most consistent design ideas and media strategies and eventually achieve a perfect fusion of cartoon character design and VIS planning.
